Where do I fit in?

187 words; about a 1 minute read

Mairie sat in her room in the Red Wind dormitory. It was too quiet. Funny how she used to love being out alone at the farm and had loved the peaceful quiet there, but here she hated it. Maybe because the farm wasn't really quiet at all. She could hear the wind rustling through the grass, the animals with their various bleating, mooing and neighing, and the insects that seem to constantly buzz through the air. And the birds, how she missed hearing their songs at dusk as she got all the animals ready for the night. But mostly she missed her grandmother's soft humming as she prepared dinner. Mairie could feel tears come to her eyes again. Right now, she hated her father for sending her here and selling the farm. Now she had no home at all to speak of. When other cadets went home during break, where was she supposed to go? She sure as sin didn't want to travel to wherever her father was these days.
So, here she was, pretty much alone on this huge campus with only herself to talk to.
