708 words; about a 4 minute read

Mission: Getting started
Location: Transport to New Haven

Amelia Gordon looked over the orders in her hand for the hundredth time at least since boarding the transport. She had nothing better to do with her time as the ship she was on wasn't normally used for transporting personnel. She was just glad she was able to have some semblance of privacy during her three day trip to New Haven. That was where the USS Siren was currently docked and her ultimate destination. The grizzled captain appeared at her door with a loud knock. "Hope you're decent, Missy. We'll be docking in a about 15 minutes. Figured I'd give you a bit of a heads up to clean up your stuff." Amelia came to the door, "I'll be waiting at the air lock to depart. Thank you for your... hospitality, Captain." The old man chuckled, "Think nothing of it. Having you on board has been a real hoot. Never seen my crew this clean and eager to work in ages. Take care of yourself out there and best of luck." Amelia laughed, "I hope they don't fall back into their old ways then, Sir. And thank you, for everything." The Captain gave her a smile as he turned to head back to the bridge of his vessel.

It took Amelia an entire minute and a half to repack her bags and check her appearance. And 10 minutes later she was indeed waiting by the airlock to depart. Six minutes later the door was opened and she stepped through the access port onto New Haven for the first time. She stopped at the arrival duty officer to check in for the small amount of time she would be on the station and to locate where she would find the USS Siren. Cargo ships don't usually dock in the same areas, as this was no different. The Siren's access docking port was two sections away and three levels up. Amelia made her way while looking at the station as she did. There were several viewing ports to allow visitors to see the station without actually entering the main area. Some day she hoped she would have time to come back and really check it out. However, right now she had to report in to her new Captain, and get acquainted with what would be expected of her.

If her father could see her now he might finally feel pride. But since she didn't follow his lordships suggestions he treated her like a big disappointment. He'd told her that her duty should be to join the diplomatic corps, after all, HE was a Duke. The fact that she'd chosen science was quite evidently the wrong choice in his book. Amelia sighed. Better not to dwell on that again. It had been a mistake to visit home right before getting her orders. She was where she wanted to be and she was happy with her choices. If he couldn't be happy for her that was his problem. At least her mother was proud of her and even gave her a special gift. A scarf with all the constellations from home woven into it with gold and silver threads. The Duchess had said that whenever she felt too far away to hold it up and she'd be able to see home. She had a feeling it would be getting a lot of use.

Amelia finally arrived at the correct docking port and showed her orders to the officer of the deck. While he check her credentials and orders she looked through the hatch to get the first glimpse at her new home. She was a little surprised at how.. clean and shiny everything was. She'd never been posted on a brand new vessel before. She smiled to herself, New position, new rank, New ship, New Captain, New Crew. And it's a bright new day to begin a new chapter in her life. Yep, she was going in new directions! She smiled as the Officer of the deck handed her back her data PADD and told her to report to the bridge and the quartermaster.

Amelia hefted her bags and made her way onto the ship and followed the directions to go to the bridge for her first stop, reporting in to the command staff.
